Practical tips and basic steps to keep your pool water clean and transparent all year round.
1. Basic cleaning at the beginning of the season
At the start of the swimming season, your pool needs a thorough cleaning to be ready for use. The first step is to partially drain the water. To do this, set the filter system's multi-way valve to "drain" and open the bottom drain valve. Close the skimmer valves and all additional lines (e.g. from the pool vacuum). As soon as the pump is running, the water begins to flow out. As the water level drops, dirt becomes visible on the walls.
There are two cleaning methods to choose from:
Manual cleaning: If you want to do the cleaning yourself, put on rubber boots and scrub the pool walls thoroughly. Note that dried dirt may be harder to remove.
Cleaning While Draining: Use a special pool brush to clean the walls while the water is draining. This will prevent dirt from settling and drying out. Pay particular attention to descaling agents - these must not be spilled on natural stone edges as they can cause stains.
Always use pool cleaners that are suitable for your pool material. At the end of emptying, some residual water remains - especially with polyester pools. This residual water can be removed with a small submersible pump or by hand.
2. This keeps the water crystal clear
Two main factors are crucial for clear and hygienic water: filtration and disinfection.
Filtration: Your filter system must be tailored to the volume of the pool. It removes suspended matter such as dust and organic particles.
Disinfection: To eliminate bacteria and microorganisms, use chemical products such as chlorine or pH regulators. For more comfortable operation, automatic systems such as salt electrolysis or ozone systems are available.
Note: Imagine the water like a sponge - it only stays clean and clear with an efficient filter system (an extremely fine sieve).
3. Green water due to algae infestation
If the water turns greenish, it is usually due to algae growth. Don't worry - with the right steps the problem can be solved quickly:
Adjust the pH value to 7.2 using appropriate means.
Perform a chlorine shock treatment: Add quick-dissolving chlorine until a level of 3-5 ppm is reached.
Run the filter pump to distribute the chlorine evenly.
After a few hours - the next day at the latest - the water should be clear again. Almost like magic.
4. Clean the pool floor
A lot of dirt collects at the bottom of the pool. There are two options for this:
Manual cleaning: Connect a floor vacuum brush with a telescopic rod and floating hose to the suction opening. Turn on the pump and vacuum up the dirt like you would with an underwater vacuum cleaner. Don't forget to clean the filter afterwards.
Automatic cleaning: A pool robot does this work independently. Make sure the model fits your pool. If necessary, seek advice from a specialist retailer.
5. Weekly pool maintenance
A regular maintenance schedule is crucial for water quality - not only to remove visible contamination, but also to prevent deposits.
If the pool is under trees or is used intensively, a cover or protective net is recommended. Automatic dosing systems (e.g. for chlorine or pH value) make care considerably easier and ensure permanently stable water.
6. Cleaning the pool filter
The filter is the heart of your system and requires regular maintenance. Check the pressure on the pressure gauge. If the pressure is increased, backwashing is required:
Set the multi-way valve to “backwash”.
Switch on the pump - the water now flows in the opposite direction through the filter and removes dirt particles.
Then rinse using the “Rinse” function to remove any residue.
Perform this process regularly to maintain filter performance.
7. Filling with well water
If tap water is not available, well water can also be used to fill the pool. However, have the water analyzed beforehand, as it may contain impurities (e.g. iron, lime or microorganisms) that disrupt the balance of the pool water. Contact a specialist company who can recommend suitable reprocessing methods.
These steps will keep your pool area clean, well-maintained and inviting all summer long. Regular maintenance, the use of suitable products and a good understanding of the interaction between technology and water quality are crucial.
